“For years, China claimed to hold an estimated 50,000 rivers within its borders. Now, more than half of them have abruptly vanished.

Last week, China’s Ministry of Water Resources announced the results of a three-year survey of the country’s waterways, revealing startling declines in water supply. According to the census, there were 22,909 rivers in China as of 2011, each covering an area of at least 100 square kilometers. That marks a decrease of about 28,000 from the government’s previous estimates, raising fears among environmentalists and putting Beijing on the defensive.”

NOVA Interview with Sally Ride: Watch an uncut interview conducted at NASA in 1984.

(FYI. Sally Ride was a feminist. Was the first US woman to fly into space. Was part of the first astronaut class to accept women. Attended Stanford. Passed away last year in July from cancer and left behind her Sally Ride Sciences-a group committed to STEM education for young girls and left behind her partner Tam.)

Voyager 1 “Blue Movie”

This is the original Voyager “Blue Movie” (so named because it was built from Blue filter images). It records the approach of Voyager 1 during a period of over 60 Jupiter days. Notice the difference in speed and direction of the various zones of the atmosphere. The interaction of the atmospheric clouds and storms shows how dynamic the Jovian atmosphere is.

As Voyager 1 approached Jupiter in 1979, it took images of the planet at regular intervals. This sequence is made from 66 images taken once every Jupiter rotation period (about 10 hours). This time-lapse movie uses images taken every time Jupiter longitude 68W passed under the spacecraft. These images were acquired in the Blue filter from Jan. 6 to Feb. 3 1979. The spacecraft flew from 58 million kilometers to 31 million kilometers from Jupiter during that time.

This time-lapse movie was produced at JPL by the Image Processing Laboratory in 1979.

The Voyager Project is managed for NASA by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

just finished pkd’s a scanner darkly. really really loved it. dick was heavily involved in the psychonarcotic “movement” of the 60s and in many ways, a scanner darkly is an autobiography of drug-induced paranoia disguised as a sci-fi crime thriller.
